What remains unseen

Kill Sites is an evolving artist-led record of slaughter infrastructure and its consequences. It accompanies Jenny Nijenhuis’ creative practice, making the industrial landscape of animal killing visible.

Kill Sites connects to a larger artistic body of work focused on climate change and animal rights. The entire project aims to point out how our separation from the food industry has resulted in a global crisis which is destroying the natural environment.

The project aims to create awareness and draw people into the debate on how we are complicit.

Method

Locations currently shown are derived from the slaughterhouses listed by the South African Department of Agriculture official national abattoir register published by the Directorate of Veterinary Public Health, South Africa, dated 8 November 2021.

These locations are geocoded from address, town, and province data. “Exact”, “town”, and “municipality” labels show the confidence of each point. User reports remain hidden until reviewed.
